It’s been occurring with increased frequency nationwide, and now it’s happening locally. Beginning August 5th, residents in the 423 area code will need to dial all ten digits for local calls, as the Tennessee Public Utility Commission prepares to introduce a new 729 area code in March 2025. This change is necessary to accommodate growing demand for phone numbers. While calls will still go through if only seven digits are dialed until February, after that all calls must include the area code. The new 729 area code will be assigned only to new phone lines or services. Current numbers will remain unchanged.
