One Tennessee county now plans to use some of its federal COVID relief funds to purchase vans to support funeral details for veterans. The Hawkins County Commission on Monday, voted to buy two vans for the American Legion VFW Funeral Detail in Church Hill and Bulls Gap, which already provides free funeral services to veterans. Their current vans are said to be in dire need of repair. According to Hawkins County Commissioner Jason Roach, who submitted the resolution, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for a 15-passenger van is approximately $40,180. The state bid cost, which might change soon, is $30,760. The county is willing to pay up to $45,000 per van.
