Firefighters quickly contained a fast-moving blaze on Whirlwind Road in Greeneville Tuesday evening, despite 50 mph winds fanning the flames. The fire spread to nearby woods. Firefighters stayed on the scene overnight to prevent flare-ups as conditions improved with rainfall.

Camp Creek recorded an 87 mph wind gust late Tuesday night during a mountain wave wind event. The National Weather Service says the gusts, which can exceed surrounding winds, occur when strong winds are forced over mountain ranges. That wind speed is comparable to a Category One hurricane.
