After receiving a suspicious email claiming to be from a company associated with an orphanage, the student was asked to cash a nearly $3,000 check, keep $500, and return the rest via Cash App. The student wisely had the check verified by his bank, which confirmed it was fake. Fortunately, no money was lost in the scam. The investigation is ongoing.
